What to check before you buy
Off-road use puts enormous stress on frames and suspension components. Check for cracks, bent A-arms, and worn bushings. Repair costs can be high — a thorough inspection before purchase is essential.
Road-legal quads must have a V5C, valid MOT (if over 3 years old), lights, mirrors, and indicators. Off-road only machines cannot be ridden on public roads. Always verify the V5C status before buying.
Farm and utility ATVs are rated in engine hours. A machine with 500+ hours needs careful inspection. Check for oil leaks, listen for engine knock, and verify the air filter and coolant have been serviced regularly.
On 4WD machines, test all drive modes including diff lock. These systems are expensive to repair if faulty. Test on a slope if possible to verify traction and braking performance.
